Liverpool makes a decision about the future of Virgil van Dijk at the club

Liverpool plans to break open and extend Virgil van Dijk's contract, sources tell FootballTransfers. The central defender currently has a contract until mid-2025, but if it's up to the club, Van Dijk will remain connected to Liverpool even after his playing career.

While Mohamed Salah wants to leave Liverpool next summer, the Reds, in turn, want to do everything to keep Van Dijk at the club. The English top club has already said goodbye to Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Roberto Firmino, and Fabinho in the recent period, making it unlikely that Liverpool will facilitate the departures of Salah or Van Dijk.

Although Liverpool underwent a significant transformation last summer, the club is very eager to continue with Van Dijk. The now 32-year-old defender made the move from Southampton to Liverpool in 2018 for 84.7 million euros and has won everything there is to win with the top club. Now that Van Dijk has reached the twilight of his career, Liverpool hopes to extend his contract at least once more and simultaneously make arrangements for a trajectory to eventually become a coach within the club.

In addition to Van Dijk, Liverpool also hopes to extend the contract of Jürgen Klopp. The German coach is essentially tied to England until mid-2026, but has an option for two more seasons. Liverpool remains satisfied with the head coach and is considering offering Klopp an upgraded contract.
