Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo from Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, with 54 goals, and Temwa Chawing from Wuhan in China, with 63 goals, were officially confirmed on Monday as the top goal scorers of the year 2023.

With all championships and competitions worldwide concluded, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) formalized the achievements of Ronaldo and Chawing. In Ronaldo's case, it came after a closely contested battle, while Chawing's victory was long expected, as she finished with a lead of 24 goals over the second-placed player.

At the age of 38, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a total of 54 goals, two more than Frenchman Kyllian Mbappé from Paris Saint Germain and Englishman Harry Kane from Bayern Munich, who started their competitive vacation earlier.

Norwegian Erling Haaland, with 50 goals, led the race at the end of November; however, an injury kept him out of the final seven games, finishing in fourth place.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 44 goals for his club and 10 for the Portugal national team.

Argentinian Lionel Messi still holds the record for goals in a calendar year, with 91 goals in 2012.

This is the second World's Best Top Scorer award for Al Nassr players in recent years. In 2019, Moroccan Abderrazak Hamdallah was also honored with 57 goals.

Temwa Chawinga scored 51 goals for her club in China and 12 for the Malawi national team, with her 63 goals clearly surpassing the 39 goals from Mexican Verónica Corral of Pachuca and the 38 goals from compatriot Kiana Palácios.
