Technical advisor's position at PSG wavers due to Mbappé saga

Since last summer, Campos has been in charge of PSG's transfer policy, even though the 58-year-old Portuguese is officially only employed as an advisor. Nonetheless, according to Le Parisien and L'Équipe, the former champion maker of AS Monaco and Lille is held responsible by chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi for the saga surrounding Kylian Mbappé. The French star player is known to be heading for an exit because he refused to take up the option to extend his contract, which runs until 2024, for an additional year.

The issue surrounding Mbappé seems to have implications for Campos. According to Le Parisien, it is highly doubtful whether he will still be employed as PSG's technical advisor in September. L'Équipe also suggests that his position is shaky. According to RMC Sport, the Portuguese's relationship with Al-Khelaïfi has significantly cooled since Mbappé set off a bomb with the letter in which he informed the club that he would not extend his contract. Al-Khelaïfi is said to have furiously asked Campos if he was working for the French star's entourage.

Campos no longer holds the reins in transfers. According to French reports, the interest in Dembélé, who is about to move from Barcelona, and Harry Kane comes from Al-Khelaïfi. According to Le Parisien, Campos is criticized for bringing in too many players from agent Jorge Mendes' roster, with Benfica striker Ramos being the next. The fact that the powerful Mendes has so much influence in the Paris dressing room is not considered desirable by PSG.

As such, Campos' future at Parc des Princes is highly uncertain, and it is not ruled out that PSG may get a new technical director a year after the changing of the guard. There are rumors that the club management is already looking for a successor, with the name of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini already being mentioned. Meanwhile, Campos has no choice but to await the outcome of the Mbappé saga and to continue building a team that can compete with the European top, undisturbed.
