Riyad Mahrez believes that after winning the treble with Manchester City, he also deserves to win the African Golden Ball.
The 32-year-old Algerian is one of the contenders and faces competition from players such as Victor Osimhen, who had an exceptional season with Napoli, and Yassine Bounou, who excelled with Morocco in the World Cup and won the Europa League with Sevilla.
'I was a significant player in the Premier League and the FA Cup,' Mahrez argues in L'Équipe. 'Slightly less so in the Champions League, but over the past few years, I have always been important in this competition. There is a kind of logic for me to be rewarded with this prize.'
'It's true that Bounou won the Europa League, but that in no way compares to City's historic treble,' says Mahrez, who now plays in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli. The winger previously won the African Golden Ball in 2017 after winning the Premier League with Leicester City.
