Fener make painful slip in Turkish title race

Fenerbahçe had not lost a single match in the Turkish Süper Lig this season, but that impressive run came to an end on Friday evening. The Sari Kanaryalar slipped up away to bottom-placed Fatih Karagümrük. As a result, arch-rivals Galatasaray could strike a major blow in the title race on Saturday evening.

Fener make painful slip in Turkish title race

Fenerbahce suffered a major setback in the Turkish title race on Friday evening after falling to a shock 2-0 defeat away to bottom club Fatih Karagumruk. For a side that had gone through the entire league campaign without losing a single match until now, this was a painful result and one that could have serious consequences in the fight for the Super Lig crown.

The defeat was especially striking because Fenerbahce had built much of their season on consistency. Even if they had not always been dominant, they had at least remained extremely difficult to beat. That resilience had allowed them to stay in touch with leaders and defending champions Galatasaray, keeping the pressure on at the top of the table. However, against a team sitting at the foot of the standings, that unbeaten run came to an abrupt and unexpected end.

The last time Fenerbahce had lost a league match in Turkey was on 26 May 2025, when they were beaten 4-2 by Hatayspor. That result had already raised eyebrows at the time, given that Hatayspor had already been relegated and had endured a very poor campaign. Apart from Adana Demirspor, whose total was badly affected by a points deduction and who collected only 2 points, Hatayspor were among the weakest sides in the division. That made the latest defeat against Karagumruk even more surprising, because once again Fenerbahce dropped points against a team struggling badly near the bottom.

While their unbeaten league record had looked impressive on paper, it had never told the full story of Fenerbahce season. This was not a flawless campaign built on total control. The Istanbul giants had already drawn 9 matches, which showed that they had left valuable points on the table even before this loss. In a title race where margins are often very fine, draws can be almost as damaging as defeats, especially when a direct rival keeps finding ways to win.

The turbulence at the club earlier in the season also suggested that all was not entirely calm behind the scenes. José Mourinho was dismissed after Fenerbahce failed to secure qualification for the Champions League, a major disappointment for a club with ambitions of competing at the highest European level. That decision underlined the pressure surrounding the team and the lack of patience for setbacks, even at an early stage of the season.

Since then, Domenico Tedesco has overseen a more stable period. Results had generally been steady, and Fenerbahce had remained competitive in the title race. Still, the German Italian coach has not been on the touchline in recent weeks after being hospitalised with pneumonia. In his absence, assistant coach Zeki Murat Gole has taken charge of the team. Although the structure and direction of the side remained intact for a while, nights like this raise questions about whether the absence of the head coach is now beginning to have a deeper impact.

Before kick-off on Friday, the gap between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray was 4 points. That was already a significant margin, but still small enough for the title race to remain very much alive. Now, though, this defeat opens the door for Galatasaray to stretch that advantage even further. With a home match against city rivals Istanbul Basaksehir to come on Saturday evening, the defending champions have a huge opportunity to tighten their grip on first place and land a psychological blow on their biggest rivals.

From the opening stages, the match did not develop in the way Fenerbahce would have hoped. Fatih Karagumruk, despite their difficult season, approached the game with energy and belief. Rather than sitting back and simply trying to survive, they sensed vulnerability and made the most of their chances. That boldness was rewarded in the fifteenth minute when Bartug Elmaz opened the scoring. The goal carried an extra layer of intrigue because Elmaz is on loan from Fenerbahce, making it an even more frustrating moment for the visitors.

Conceding early immediately put Fenerbahce under pressure. A team challenging for the title would normally be expected to respond with authority against the side at the bottom of the table, but that reaction never truly arrived. Instead, Karagumruk grew stronger as the game progressed, feeding off their advantage and the tension that began to spread through the Fenerbahce side.

The situation became even worse for the visitors in first half stoppage time, when Brazilian winger Serginho doubled the lead to make it 2-0. That second goal was a huge blow, not only because of the scoreline itself but because of when it arrived. Going into the break 1-0 down would at least have left Fenerbahce with room to regroup and attack the second half with clarity. At 2-0, the task became far more difficult, and Karagumruk were suddenly in a commanding position.

Fenerbahce did try to change the rhythm after the interval. Anthony Musaba, the former NEC and Heerenveen forward, was introduced immediately after half-time in an attempt to inject more pace and unpredictability into the attack. Yet the change did not alter the course of the contest. Karagumruk remained organised and committed, while Fenerbahce struggled to turn possession into real danger.

Jayden Oosterwolde started for Fenerbahce, but like many of his team-mates he could not prevent a hugely disappointing evening for the away side. At the other end, Karagumruk were driven by a front line that included Sam Larsson, formerly of Feyenoord, alongside ex-Roda JC striker Tiago Cukur. They may not have been expected to decide the title race, but their team delivered one of the most important results of the weekend.

For Karagumruk, this was more than just an upset. It was a statement of belief from a side that has spent much of the season fighting against the odds. For Fenerbahce, it was a night of frustration, missed opportunity and mounting pressure. Their unbeaten run is over, their margin for error is smaller than ever, and their biggest rivals now have the chance to move even further clear.
