Borussia Dortmund moved two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after beating Stuttgart 1-0, while Freiburg were held 2-2 by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Borussia Dortmund will head into the international break alone at the top of the Bundesliga after making the most of Freiburg earlier slip and grinding out a 1-0 victory over Stuttgart. Maximilian Beier scored the only goal of the match in the 70th minute, giving Dortmund the three points they needed to move onto 12 and open a two-point advantage over both Freiburg and Bayern Munich. It was not the most spectacular performance of their season, but it was exactly the kind of result that can prove valuable over a long campaign, particularly on a weekend when one of their closest rivals failed to win and Bayern responded with a huge 7-0 victory over Union Berlin on Friday.
The table now has Dortmund in first place with 12 points, while Freiburg and Bayern sit just behind on 10. The margins remain small, but the psychological value of going into the international break as outright leaders should not be underestimated. Dortmund have managed to combine results with enough consistency to take advantage whenever a rival drops points, and that is precisely what happened after Freiburg drew 2-2 away to Eintracht Frankfurt. Rather than allowing the opportunity to pass, Dortmund did enough against Stuttgart to turn the situation in their favour.
Beier makes the difference against Stuttgart
The match against Stuttgart was decided relatively late, with Beier breaking the deadlock after 70 minutes. Until that point, the game had remained tight and Dortmund had been forced to stay patient against a Stuttgart side that, despite its poor start to the season, still made the leaders work for the result. Beier goal changed everything. Once Dortmund moved in front, the task became one of control rather than pursuit, and the home side were able to protect the advantage through to the final whistle.
Four minutes after the goal, Fábio Silva was introduced. Freiburg let Dortmund take control
Dortmund opportunity had been created earlier in the day in Frankfurt, where Freiburg twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Eintracht. Freiburg had entered the match unbeaten and were trying to maintain the pace at the top, but they were forced to spend much of the afternoon responding rather than dictating. Ebnoutalib put Eintracht ahead after just 10 minutes, giving the home side an early advantage and immediately forcing Freiburg to chase.
Scherhant equalised in the 34th minute, but Freiburg were level for only two minutes before Burkardt restored Eintracht lead in the 36th. That quick response was a major blow, especially after Freiburg had worked their way back into the contest. Still, they refused to allow the game to get away from them. Japan international Suzuki made it 2-2 in the 48th minute, and from there Freiburg were able to preserve their unbeaten record, even if the dropped points proved costly in the race for first place.
The draw showed both sides of Freiburg current form. On one hand, the ability to recover twice away from home and avoid defeat underlines the resilience that has helped them stay near the top. On the other, conceding twice and failing to convert the comeback into a victory meant Dortmund had a clear opening later in the day. The leaders took it, and Freiburg now enter the break two points behind rather than level or ahead.
Bayern send a warning with seven-goal win
Bayern Munich remain firmly in the picture as well after their emphatic 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin on Friday. That result kept them on 10 points and ensured they did not lose contact with the top despite Dortmund victory. In terms of scoreline, Bayern produced the most dominant performance of the round, but the table still belongs to Dortmund for now. The fact that Bayern are only two points behind means the pressure at the summit will remain intense once domestic football resumes.
The contrast between the three leading sides is already interesting. Dortmund have shown the ability to win narrow matches and take opportunities when they appear. Freiburg have proved difficult to beat and remain undefeated, but the Frankfurt draw cost them first place. Bayern, meanwhile, demonstrated their attacking power with seven goals against Union. All three have reached the international break in strong positions, but Dortmund are the only team who can look at the table and see nobody above them.
Stuttgart problems continue
At the other end of the conversation, Stuttgart situation is becoming increasingly concerning. Three defeats in four matches have left them on just three points and in 15th place, much closer to the bottom than they would have hoped at this stage. The absence of Tiago Tomás has limited one of their options, but the broader problem is the lack of results. The presence of nine German players in the starting eleven gave the team a strongly domestic identity, but that did not translate into enough attacking threat or control to change the outcome. Stuttgart were still level deep into the second half, so the defeat was not the result of being overwhelmed throughout the match. Dortmund enter the break with momentum
For Dortmund, this was therefore a very productive weekend even without a spectacular display. They watched Freiburg drop points, saw Bayern make a statement but remain behind them, and then did their own job against Stuttgart. Beier goal was enough to settle the match and preserve Dortmund momentum at exactly the right time, allowing them to spend the international break as Bundesliga leaders.
The advantage is still only two points, so there is no room for complacency, but the significance of the position is obvious. The early stages of a league season are often about building rhythm and avoiding unnecessary setbacks, and Dortmund have so far managed that better than anyone else.
