Why national coach Koeman is disappointed with Inter Milan's spot in the final

Internazionale reaches the Champions League final after a 1-0 victory over AC Milan. That's great news for Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries, who are part of Simone Inzaghi's squad. However, it's less favorable for national coach Ronald Koeman because he will have the two internationals back later for the Nations League final. Italy and Spain are playing the other semifinal of the Nations League.

The final of the billion-dollar tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 10th, at Wembley Stadium in London. Just four days later, the Dutch national team will face the semifinals of the Final Four in the Nations League at De Kuip. Dumfries and De Vrij will join the team at the earliest a day after winning or losing the billion-dollar tournament, potentially with a physically demanding match already played. Without that final match, the season would end a week earlier.

Dumfries is a regular starter for both the Dutch national team and Inter, while De Vrij is a bench player for both teams. For Koeman, it is hoped that both players will be fit enough to join the Dutch camp after the Champions League final: the players are at least included in the pre-selection of the group that may compete for the first-ever Nations League victory.

Since AC Milan does not have any Dutch internationals under contract, the final turns out unfavorably for Koeman. From this perspective, he may also prefer the other semifinal played on Wednesday night between Manchester City and Real Madrid. If Nathan Aké's Citizens advance to the final, Koeman may only have three internationals, including two regular starters, at his disposal very late. Marcelo Brozovic (Inter) will go to the final with opponent Croatia, while it is still unknown whether Luka Modric with Real Madrid will do so.
