Roger Schmidt reportedly has little regard for the Benfica supporters who were angry on Friday night over the substitution of João Neves. The coach's decision in the game against Farense met with criticism from some fans, but Schmidt stood by his decision.
The one-goal draw between Benfica and Farense, the second consecutive in the league and the third in all competitions, threatens to cause damage at the club from Luz. Roger Schmidt expressed considerable displeasure with the fans' criticism during the match and threatens to leave.
"I will think about what happened tonight, and if I am the problem, if Benfica needs a coach to make substitutions as the fans want, there's no problem, I can leave. Then someone else can replace me, and maybe it will be better, we will see. If I am the problem, I give room for another coach to be better than me. If I am not good enough, I can leave, it's very easy and it's something I will think about," said the German.
The issue at hand is the criticism the coach faced from the stands when he chose to substitute João Neves and Tengstedt, bringing in Gonçalo Guedes and Musa.
Roger Schmidt also asked critical fans not to attend Benfica's games at the stadium. 'I want to say thank you to the fans, they supported what the players did until the last minute. But the negative ones should stay at home, because it's not good for the team. Those who are not happy with what the players and team have done, please stay at home,' began the German.
If you are not happy with the team, please stay at home, because we cannot do better. With the effort the players made, it's better to stay at home. If you are not able to support after what the players did today, come back later when we are champions and go to Marquês de Pombal," added Schmidt before concluding: "To be as you were today, with the players doing what they did, if you don't respect the coach, then it's better to stay at home, it's not acceptable to me.
