Real Madrid regained the top position in La Liga on Saturday night from Girona. The team managed by coach Carlo Ancelotti faced little opposition from the lower-ranked Granada at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.
Real Madrid saw their rival Girona win against Valencia on Saturday afternoon, putting the Madrid side back in pursuit of Daley Blind's team. Real faced Granada, who on paper seemed like an easy opponent as the Andalusians are second to last in La Liga.
The home team took it easy in the first half but managed to score from one of the rare attacks.
After a beautiful through ball from Toni Kroos, Brahim Díaz found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper André Ferreira, who replaced the injured goalkeeper Raúl Fernández after just eleven minutes. Díaz calmly finished to make it 1-0. Jude Bellingham hoped for a penalty just before halftime, but referee Pablo González Fuertes did not heed the Englishman's plea.
Rodrygo's Streak
Joselu posed a dangerous threat to Granada's goalkeeper Ferreira just before halftime, but his shot narrowly missed the target. Just before the hour mark, it became 2-0. Following a beautiful combination between Díaz and Joselu, the ball found its way to Bellingham's right foot, whose shot was saved by Ferreira. In the rebound, the incoming Rodrygo found the back of the net. For the Brazilian, it was his seventh goal in his last five matches for Real.
Rodrygo, who, until his current streak, had never scored in more than two consecutive matches in 185 official games for Real, received an applause substitution at Bernabéu five minutes before the end. Thanks in part to his goal, Real is back on top in La Liga. After fifteen matches, both Real and Girona have 38 points, with Real leading on goal difference. Real will visit the seventh-placed Real Betis next week.
