Edgar Davids has opened the door to Ajax. The former Olhanense coach and former assistant to the Dutch national team has stated that he is open to a return to the Amsterdam club under certain conditions.
At the table of the football talk show Rondo, Davids criticized the leadership of Ajax in recent years. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in a revival, attributing this to the appointment of Louis van Gaal. "If Van Gaal asked me for a role within Ajax, I might be interested. You know that there will now be structure and clear progress. If you look at the clubs he has been at, that has always been the case."
After working as an assistant to Van Gaal with the Dutch national team last winter, Ajax already approached Davids. "They asked if I wanted to become a youth coach. But with all due respect: I have all the qualifications and I just came from Qatar. And then you're going to give me the youth team? I do want to do something for those young guys, but as a coach, I also want to continue developing myself."
"I wanted at least the second team (Jong Ajax, editor's note). They were also fourth from the bottom at that time. I am willing to do that, but if you come to me with the Under-16s, then I pass." Davids shared that he has received a number of offers as a coach, but he deliberately turned them down. "My choice was not to step in, because sometimes you already know what the consequences will be. There have been offers. But you do want to make it as easy as possible for yourself to perform well."
