Lionel Messi will not return to Barcelona in January now that it's the winter break in Major League Soccer. The Argentine star doesn't anticipate making a comeback to Europe after his move to Inter Miami.
Messi signed with a U.S. club in July. Since then, there have been rumors that the 36-year-old left-footer might return to Barcelona because there is no football in the MLS during the winter months. In an interview with France Football, the Ballon d'Or winner has now ruled that out himself.
"No chance. I don't think I will return to Europe. Of course, I will miss playing in the Champions League or La Liga, but I have given my all, so I don't feel any frustration."
Last summer, after his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, a return to Barcelona was once again an option, but the financial situation of the Catalans didn't allow it. "I could have returned for sure, but it wasn't meant to be. It was similar to 2021 when I had to leave for Paris," confirmed Messi. "I certainly thought about returning to Barça and finishing my career there as I've always wanted, but it wasn't possible."
Messi, however, still closely follows his beloved club. "I have the impression that the team has developed well since Xavi's arrival, with a mix of young players and more experienced players like Lewandowski and Koundé. The young players are performing at an excellent level. They have a great team and the chance to show great things this year," said the Argentine superstar, who is pleased that, despite interest from Europe and Saudi Arabia, he chose Miami. "We feel good."
