Samuel Armenteros will not be joining Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie after all. The 33-year-old striker has opted for a contract in the second tier in Saudi Arabia with Al Kholood.
This marks the end of Armenteros' third spell at Heracles, with whom he became the champion of the Keuken Kampioen Divisie (second tier) last season. "My heart is and will always be black and white," Armenteros writes in an open letter to the Heracles fans.
"I arrived here as a just 19-year-old boy, and from the first week, I already felt at home. I am very grateful for everything you have meant to me."
Heracles aims to bid a fitting farewell to Armenteros soon. "Samuel is not only a good footballer but also a fantastic person," says technical director Nico Jan Hoogma. "He has served Heracles Almelo in three periods and has meant a lot to the club. Samuel deserves a proper send-off from the audience."
Armenteros has played 188 matches for Heracles. With 71 goals to his name, he ranks second on the club's all-time top scorers list, trailing thirteen goals behind Everton Ramos da Silva.
